Dear Friends:  Keenly aware of the growing need for physicians in California, the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences is training physicians to meet the needs of California's underserved inland, rural, and urban populations. UCR students from any major on campus may apply for the program once they have completed the necessary college prerequisites. By making this unique program more accessible to students from all backgrounds, UCR hopes to facilitate its ongoing efforts to recruit and train physicians who will take up practice in medically underserved areas of California. We appreciate the support of our many alumni, donors and friends in the pursuit of our mission.

FastStart

FastStart
is a five-week intensive, residential summer academic program designed for disadvantaged incoming UCR freshmen who aspire to careers in the health professions. It provides a wonderful introduction to campus life while reinforcing and building study skills and knowledge in math, biology and chemistry – the gateway sciences so critical to pre-med success. UCR seeks to enhance scholarship support for these students, many of whom face significant financial barriers in their pursuit of a career in medicine.

Medical Scholars Program

With the goal of increasing the number of socio-economically and/or educationally disadvantaged students prepared to enter medical school or an allied health discipline, the Medical Scholars Program works with undergraduate students beginning in their freshman year at UCR.  The program offers special seminars and workshops, peer mentor advising, individual faculty counseling and personalized academic support and enrichment activities throughout the undergraduate years.

Health Sciences Partnership

The Health Sciences Partnership
promotes collaboration between UCR and area high schools which encourage their students to health careers through their own Health Academies. There are several areas of collaboration, primary of which is UCR students mentoring students at the high school level. By creating a sustainable, long-term pipeline of students interested in medical careers, UCR is making a profound impact on both the lives of these young people and the health care industry.

Health Sciences Initiative (HSI)

In response to our region’s extraordinary need for more physicians, plans are underway to launch the first new U.C. medical school established since the 1970’s. Built on the strong foundation of our 30-year UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences, , the UCR medical school will be innovative, academically distinguished, financially sound and committed to serving the underserved with the annual graduation of new medical doctors prepared to take on the rigors and challenges of 21st Century health care delivery.

Health Sciences Research Institute (HSRI)

More than 100 UCR faculty members are conducting groundbreaking research focusing on a number of issues including cancer prevention, brain disorders, bacterial and tropical infectious diseases, nanomedicine, diet and aging, health care management and health psychology. The HSRI will bring these and other researchers together to collaborate and advance medical research, more quickly transfer research findings to clinical use and attract more federal funding. Support is needed for laboratories, equipment, endowed chairs, and funds for professorships and distinguished lecturers. Science Library Expansion Completed in 1998, the Science Library is the home of a magnificent collection of science materials for our students. Because science doesn’t stand still, we require an endowment to purchase timely books, periodicals and electronic materials as well as to establish special collections. Support is also needed for an endowed library chair dedicated to the health sciences.

Biomedical Sciences Donors
We are fortunate to have the continued support of a number of individuals and organizations, including:

Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Haider, who have pledged the patent royalties from the Haider spine surgery device. This wonderful commitment funds the Salma Haider Endowed Chair in Biomedical Sciences held by the dean of the Biomedical Sciences Program. As this fund grows, the monies have been designated to help disadvantaged students seeking careers as physicians.

Dr. William Kaloostian & Dr. Aida Shirinian, who have pledged $500,000 to help disadvantaged students pursue careers as physicians. These funds have helped support FastStart for the past few years.

The California Wellness Foundation continues its support of FastStart through a second round of funding. This will enable approximately 20 deserving students to attend the program at no cost through 2008.

The Riverside Community Health Foundation’s $30,000 grant supporting the Community Health Externship Program that allows our students to gain firsthand health care experience by working directly with practicing physicians in clinics located in medically-underserved areas.

The Medical Scholars Summer Research Program (MSSRP) provides outstanding undergraduates from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to work closely with faculty and graduate students on a 8-week summer research project. This new program is funded in part by a generous donation from Linda and Warren Williams.
