Donors and Friends

Supporting the Biomedical Sciences Program

We appreciate the support of our many alumni, donors and friends in the pursuit of our mission of recruiting and training physicians who will take up practice in medically underserved areas of California. Your gift will help make our programs more accessible to students from all backgrounds.

Ways of Giving

There are various ways you can immediately impact the UCR Biomedical Sciences Program and change a student’s life.

  • Make an Immediate Gift Online
Make a donation right now using your credit card. Visit our online gift form to give now.
  • Outright Gifts of Cash and Securities
Contributions of cash and appreciated securities are simple to do and provide immediate tax savings. Additionally, gifts of this kind benefit the UCR now.
  • Gifts of Personal Property
Almost any form of property, such as works of art, antiques and other personal items can be a suitable charitable gift. In many cases, the full appraised value of the property on the date of the gift will be credited to the university.
  • Gifts of Real Estate
The tax benefits of appreciated real estate provide you with an immediate tax deduction, and capital gains tax savings. Real estate can be made now or through your will or living trust. Donors can also make a tax-deductible current gift of their home while continuing to live in and enjoy it for their lifetimes with a gift of retained life interest.
  • Gifts of Intellectual Property
Gifts of intellectual property such as copyrights, patents, royalties, licenses, and technical data are welcome. The tax and legal provisions that govern these gifts vary according to the type of property.
  • An Estate Gift
For information visit our Planned Giving site or call our office at (951) 827-2354.
  • Gifts by Wills or Living Wills
Gifts made by will or through a revocable living trust may result in estate tax savings and can be established to enhance an endowed fund that will honor the donor or loved one in perpetuity or to establish a named or memorial fund.
  • Gifts of Life Insurance
Some of the most satisfying uses for life insurance policies are connected with charitable giving. Gifts of Life Insurance are a way to give a large gift with low cost to you, and receive the current deductions as well as possible future deductions.
  • Charitable Remainder Lead Trusts
A charitable lead trust can provide immediate cash gifts from the trust income to the university for a stated period of years. After that time, the appreciated assets return to you, or transfer tax-free to your heirs.
  • Other Types of Gifts Not Listed
There are many additional ways to support UCR. If you have questions about giving personal property, appreciated securities, gifts in kinds, or by any other means, please contact Diane James at (951) 827-6297.

Areas to Support

There are many different ways that your gift can benefit the program and help educate the next generation of physicians.

  • Scholarships and Fellowships

Scholarships are awarded to medical students based on merit and/or financial need and fellowships to outstanding graduate student researchers engaged in biomedical research. The awards listed below provide this critical financial assistance to our deserving and talented students. Donations to these scholarships and fellowships are always welcomed or you may also honor a loved one by establishing a new scholarship or fellowship.

    • Ernst Noltmann, M.D. Memorial Award in Biomedical Sciences
    • Carl Fuglie M.D. Award
    • Celso Gonzalez/Lopo Family Medical Student Endowed Fellowship
    • Robert M. Zweig M.D. Award
    • Joy Tilton Graduate Researcher Fellowship
    • Frances Marlatt Baugh Graduate Researcher Fellowship
  • FastStart

FastStart is a five-week intensive, residential summer academic program designed for disadvantaged incoming UCR freshmen who aspire to careers in the health professions. It provides a wonderful introduction to campus life while reinforcing and building study skills and knowledge in math, biology and chemistry – the gateway sciences so critical to pre-med success. UCR seeks to enhance scholarship support for these students, many of whom face significant financial barriers in their pursuit of a career in medicine.

  • Health Sciences Partnership

The Health Sciences Partnership promotes collaboration between UCR and area high schools which encourage their students to health careers through their own Health Academies. There are several areas of collaboration, primary of which is UCR students mentoring students at the high school level. By creating a sustainable, long-term pipeline of students interested in medical careers, UCR is making a profound impact on both the lives of these young people and the health care industry.

Biomedical Sciences Donors

We are fortunate to have the continued support of a number of individuals and organizations, including:

  • Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Haider, who have pledged the patent royalties from the Haider spine surgery device. This wonderful commitment funds the Salma Haider Endowed Chair in Biomedical Sciences held by the dean of the Biomedical Sciences Program. As this fund grows, the monies have been designated to help disadvantaged students seeking careers as physicians.
  • Dr. William Kaloostian & Dr. Aida Shirinian, who have pledged $500,000 to help disadvantaged students pursue careers as physicians. These funds have helped support FastStart for the past few years.
  • The California Wellness Foundation continues its support of FastStart through a second round of funding. This will enable approximately 20 deserving students to attend the program at no cost through 2008.
  • The Riverside Community Health Foundation’s $30,000 grant supporting the Community Health Externship Program that allows our students to gain firsthand health care experience by working directly with practicing physicians in clinics located in medically-underserved areas.
  • The Medical Scholars Summer Research Program (MSSRP) provides outstanding undergraduates from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to work closely with faculty and graduate students on a 8-week summer research project. This new program is funded in part by a generous donation from Linda and Warren Williams.
