University of California, Riverside

Division of Biomedical Sciences

Dean's Welcome

Dean ByusOn behalf of the University of California, Riverside’s (UCR) Division of Biomedical Sciences, I want to thank you for your interest in  Riverside County’s only medical program, founded in 1974.

Working in conjunction with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, UCR provides a unique path of entrance to one of the country's leading medical schools. A maximum of 24 UCR students are chosen each year to participate in this highly regarded medical school program, unique in California. Students selected into the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences take the first two years of their medical education at UCR and the remaining two years at UCLA. They receive their M.D. degrees from UCLA.

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

The division is delighted to announce a recent restructuring of the Haider program that will increase accessibility to the program for UCR students from any major – and from transfer students! Most students will apply during the spring of their junior year at UCR in a traditional medical school application timetable – through the American Medical College Admissions Service (AMCAS). They will have the opportunity to apply to the Haider program as well as to other medical schools, thereby increasing their chances of medical school admission. Only under exceptional circumstances will the Haider program matriculate students without a baccalaureate degree.

The following pages contain further details about the Haider program and about our graduate programs in biomedical sciences. Please note that certain prerequisite courses and time lines apply to the Haider program – they are detailed on the appropriate pages.

We look forward to hearing from you with questions and comments on our programs and our services.

Craig V. Byus, Ph.D.
Dean and Program Director
