Training the Next Generation of Biomedical Scientists

Offered by the School of Medicine at UC Riverside, the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences is an interdisciplinary translational research program that incorporates a medical school curriculum with basic science training. Our Ph.D. students become independent research scientists with skills that allow them to bridge the wide gulfs that exist between clinical medicine and basic science research.

The program offers opportunities with more than 60 faculty members conducting research at the forefront of more than a dozen different fields, including including neuroscience, bioengineering, immunology and molecular endocrinology.

The training leads to a Ph.D. degree for students holding a B.S./B.A. or M.D. degree or students currently in an M.D. program.

Recent graduates have secured academic and research positions at prestigious institutions, such as the University of Washington and UC San Diego, as well as biotechnology companies such as EMD Millipore and Biotronik Medical Devices.

About the Curriculum

Our innovative and rigorous program integrates medical curriculum with mentored research and critical analysis of research-based modeling of human pathophysiology. Features include:

  • First-year instructions follow first-year medical school curriculum, and provide unique education in the molecular mechanisms of disease, epidemiology, therapeutics and clinical connections.
  • Additional courses include biostatistics, research problem-based learning and discovery in small group sessions and independent study.
  • An emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Modern biomedical research techniques and instrumentation.
  • Weekly casual student/faculty work-in-progress seminars followed by pizza lunch.
  • Weekly seminars featuring eminent researchers on topics focusing on experimental modeling of the pathophysiology of human disease.
